Whether you know his name or not, you know his work. Art Paul is the original art director and legendary illustrator for Playboy–the man who created the iconic bunny logo. We were asked to photograph him for a feature in This Is Chicago, a book published by AIGA Chicago that celebrates 15 designers who have had a significant impact on Chicago’s design community.
As an original resident of the John Hancock Center, Art Paul moved in the year the building was completed. Entering his home on the 80th-something floor was like stepping back in time. Half of the square footage was his studio, chock full of original Playboy art and self-portraits lining most of the available space on the walls. It was a day we remember fondly. His kind and gentle nature touched us deeply and hearing some fun stories about Hugh Hefner and the elaborate parties wasn’t bad either.
